Year 3 Neuro-Inclusive Environment, Climate & Sustainability Curriculum: Term 2

Year 3, Term 2 of the Heal Earth Curriculum invites children to investigate the secret life of materials through the Future of Food & Waste module. This term transitions learners from being simple consumers to becoming Material Stewards who understand that in a healthy world, there is no such thing as Away. Students explore the difference between linear and circular economies, deconstructing the Story of Stuff to see how our daily choices ripple across the planet.

Learners become Waste Detectives as they set up Landfill in a Jar experiments to observe the permanence of plastic versus the magic of biological rot. They trace the Life of a Spoon from extraction to disposal, map the carbon footprints of imported fruit using Food Miles Strings, and meet the FBI (Fungus, Bacteria, Invertebrates) to witness nature's perfect recycling system. By auditing their own packaging and upcycling junk into valuable new tools, students develop the critical thinking and agency needed to close the loop and protect the Earth’s soil.
